  1. Sorry, forgot to answer helmet question: I'd say its optional for this session as theres minimal risk, but would advise to wear one anyway for the most authentic re-creation of scenarios. If you're wearing a helmet on a trip its likely because there's an increased chance of tipping over, so in some ways you're likely to be wearing one when you are involved in real rescues. Good to practice with all your usual kit đź‘Ť
  2. Hi Ian, I'll be coming past you so can pick you up. Is 9am OK? Could you please text/WhatsApp your address to 07730411538 Thanks Duncan
  3. Rescue practice for Sea Kayakers on Coniston aimed at getting skilled up & refreshed before the water temperatures drop. (Coniston is about 15deg C just now, but lake & sea temperatures will drop to <5deg C in the winter) If you're going to be sea paddling between late autumn & spring, this session is for you. This will be primarily a wet session, looking at efficiency in assisted re-entries (from the point of view of both rescuer and rescuee). There will be time to work on self-rescue techniques, and possibly practice reuniting a swimmer separated from their kit. The water is still fairly warm at the moment , and we'll find a good spot out of the wind, however please do wear extra layers under your dry suit so we can make the most of our time & maximise the scope of the session. It's easiest to learn when comfortable, & with good planning there's no need to get cold during late summer rescue practice. 1. Event co-ordinator: Duncan Goulder (07730411538) 2. Trip Leader leader: Duncan Goulder 3. Trip type: Rescue practice 4. Level of ability : Improver - Intermediate 5. Date: 15/09/24 6. Venue: Brown Howe Car Park on Coniston Water 7. Meet point: Brown Howe Car Park , 10am (https://maps.app.goo.gl/FZYo4A2VSot5hHcS8) (You can park in a layby just north of the car park for free if you get there early enough & boats can be unloaded over the wall, but it might not accomodate us all so we'll meet each other as a group in the car park to save confusion) 8. Meet to share lifts at: Arrange your own 9. Anything else: I'll be in touch on WhatsApp before the trip. If you're not sure this trip is for you, feel free to drop me a message or phone call. Please wear a drysuit (or a wetsuit with a windproof cag over it), warm under-clothes and snack/lunch. A flask of tea would be a good idea too, plus cosy clothing to look forward to afterwards! If you want to do some rolling or re-entry rolling practice you might like a neoprene hood. There'll be lots of time for questions/discussion, to try stuff out in the water, & to dial in essential techniques... Please read notes re trips here: https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/trips/ I am happy to co-ordinate and lead the trip. However, as we will be a team, we are jointly responsible for each other’s safety on the water. Please ensure you carry the correct kit for the trip you are attending. RSVP by latest 14/09/24 9PM (Currently set to 8 for planning purposes, but if it fills up do drop me a line & we'll try and alter to accomodate you) Guests by arrangement with the organiser only. Any questions before hand please feel free to give me a call (mobile number above)

    1. Trip type: Advanced water / tide race surfing - day sessions 2. Level of ability : Advanced 3. Date: Paddling Sun 21st - Tues 23rd April 2024 4. Venue: Campsite to be confirmed. Likely Anglesey Outdoors (availability to be confirmed) 5. Meet location / time : Meet either at the campsite or at put-in which will be confirmed/discussed by WhatsApp 6. Meet to share lifts at: Arrange by Whatsapp 7. Anything else: The intention is to seek out some 'fun' water for surfing sea kayaks where possibe. Primary targets are the classic tide races of Anglesey: Penrhyn Mawr, North Stack, The Swellies etc. Or other exposed headlands with suitable eddies & escape routes for the conditions. A to B type coastal trips may on the cards if wind & swell conditions are not suitable for focussing on areas of concentrated tidal flow. Things to be aware of: We will likely be working in tidal flows of over 6 knots in areas that produce standing waves & associated turbulence. We may actively seek out the steeper waves associated with wind aginst tide conditions (within reason). In other words, 'whitewater sea kayaing'. We will be taking a heavily team focussed aproach & our ambitions will be tweaked based on our cohesion as a team on the water. There will be designated leaders, however it is expected that participants will be competent boat handlers with rescue skills apropriate to the environment and the expereince to make decisions on the water. A 'normally' reliable rough water roll is pre-requisite (accepting that 'misses' do happen to all of us occasionally). We will discuss each day's plans as a team to agree on the anticipated conditions, escape routes, and contingency action plans. Please also refer to LCC’s guidance on trip suitability & kit. If we've not paddled together before, or if you’re not sure if this is for you, please give me a call on 07730411538 for a chat. I'm happy to encourage people to 'step up', but for safety I need to consider whether or not the whole group is in a position offer the support required, which will require discussion ahead of time and can't be guarenteed. Please read notes re trips here: https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/trips/ I am happy to co-ordinate and lead the trip. However, as we will be a team, we are jointly responsible for each other’s safety on the water. Please ensure you carry the correct kit for the trip. RSVP at least 2 days before the event

This event has been cancelled due to injury. I'll reschedule once I've recovered sufficiently! Sea kayak day trips around North Wales / Anglesey. The type of trips will be tailored to the preferences of those attending where possible, however attendees should have a skillset matching Lakeland Canoe Club's definition below. Please feel free to have a chat with one of the trip leaders if you want to discuss before signing up. We will base ourselves at Anglesey Outdoors which will allow us indoor space for trip planning in the evenings. This will allow us to plan trips to suit the team's ideas of what constitutes an enjoyable day on the water, which we acknowledge is different for everybody. A final decision will be made each morning in response to the weather conditions. Schedule: Arrive Anglesey Outdoors Friday morning 10th November. Trip planning chat in the bar & then off to chosen location Paddle Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Drive home Sunday afternoon / evening 1. Event coordinator Duncan Goulder 2. Trip Leader. Duncan Goulder / Simon Lerpiniere 3. Day Leader Duncan Goulder / Simon Lerpiniere 4. Trip Type. Sea Kayak day trips 5. Level of ability. Intermediate LCC definition of an "Intermediate" skillset: "You have a good understanding of paddling on the sea. You should be confident planning and undertaking safely journeys on the sea in winds up to and including force 4 and/or tides up to 2 Knots, in a sea kayak or in tidal or non-tidal environments. Your confidence should be based upon both proficiency in skills and a broad appreciation of surroundings and potential risks. Your roll is mostly successful. You can help rescue others." [https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/levels-of-experience-sea-trips/] 6. Venue. Anglesey / North Wales 7. Meet and Lifts to be arranged. 8. Details will be discussed & finalised via Whatsapp group of RSVP'd members nearer the time Please check out all LCC guidelines https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/trips/ I am happy to coordinate and lead / co-lead this trip. However, as we will be a team we are jointly responsible for each other’s safety on the water. Please ensure you carry the correct kit for the trip. https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/trips/sea-kayak-safety-kit/ No guests.

Hi, Thanks for getting in touch, & welcome to the club. Yes it's the leader that sets the rsvp limit. The web page offers an RSVP button until the places are filled, so it's tricky to keep a waiting list as such. However when people drop out of a trip they tend to post on the WhatsApp group that their place has become available & they remove themselves from the rsvp list so someone else can sign up. So it's first come first served. Depending on the trip participant limits may be extended if another leader is present. In this case though I'd prefer to keep the group concise to keep logistics simple. However there's nothing to stop another leader organising the same or similar trip independently if there was demand for it. Duncan

    1. Trip type: Coastal trip 2. Level of ability : Advanced or confident intermediate 3. Date: Paddling Sat 8th & Sun 9th July 4. Venue: Campsite to be confirmed. 5. Meet location / time : Meet either at the campsite (night before) or put-in which will be confirmed/discussed by WhatsApp 6. Meet to share lifts at: Arrange your own lift-shares. Use of the trip specific WhatsApp group may be helpful for this 7. Anything else: The main aim is to round Flamborough Head, Bempton Cliffs, continuing to Filey. The other day will likely be a coastal trip locally, possibly continuing north from Filey to Scarborough, although to be decided based on weather / sea state & group preferences. All plans are subject to an assessment of the conditions at the time of paddling and may change as a result. I'm hoping to spend some time exploring the caves if swell & tide conditions allow. Some sea kayak surfing may feature during one or both of the days depending on conditions Parts of this trip will be quite committing due to the lack of landing opportunities along the high cliffs which extend for several km either side of the Flamborough headland. The headland is exposed to wind and swell from most directions. Once beyond the cliffs the beaches may be subject to surf which could make landing a challenge. Please refer to LCC’s guidance on trip suitability, & if you’re not sure just give me a call on 07730411538 for a chat. I'll be along as soon as I can get out of work. Unlikely to be before 17:30 though

BE Covid aware Organiser: Duncan Goulder 07730411538 1. Trip type: Coastal trip 2. Level of ability : Advanced or confident intermediate 3. Date: Paddling Sat 29th & Sun 30th May, arriving at campsite evening of Friday 28th. 4. Venue: Campsite to be discussed in specific WhatsApp group 5. Meet location / time : To be discussed in specific WhatsApp group 6. Meet to share lifts at: No lift share due to covid. Shuttles with mitigation may be a feature of this trip. 7. Anything else: The main aim is to round Flamborough Head and visit the seabird colony of Bempton Cliffs, continuing to Filey. The other day will likely be a coastal trip locally, possibly continuing north from Filey to Scarborough, although to be decided based on weather / sea state & group preferences. All plans are subject to an assessment of the conditions at the time of paddling and may change as a result. Some surfing will probably feature during one or both of the days. Parts of this trip will be committing due to the lack of landing opportunities along the high cliffs which extend for several km either side of the Flamborough headland. The tidal stream (potentially up to 3 knots this weekend) would make back-tracking difficult if conditions are bigger than expected. The headland is exposed to wind and swell from north, south and east. Once beyond the cliffs the beaches may be subject to surf which can sometimes also make landing a challenge. Please refer to LCC’s guidance on trip suitability, & if you’re not sure just give me a call on 07730411538 for a chat.
  10. I see this is one of two sessions that were originally scheduled for Nov 15th: is the second group rescheduled also? I was signed on and am still keen, although I only see the rsvps for the first session on the calendar. Just wondering if its ok for me to come along or not? Thanks.

Hi Ian, Please could you get in touch with me ASAP (call or message). I'm trying to book a campsite but finding availability tricky. Would be good to know if you're bringing a tent or van etc., & also to discuss the weather forecast & expected conditions on the water. Thanks Duncan

Event details *** THIS TRIP HAS BEEN POSPONED IN LIGHT OF THE FORECAST FOR HEAVY ONSHORE WINDS AND SWELL. FUTURE DATES WILL BE POSTED *** BE COVID AWARE PEER trip Co-oridnator: Duncan Goulder (07730411538) 1. Trip type: Sea - 2 day coastal trip (24km & 15km) with overnight camp & shuttles. 2. Level of ability : Intermediate 3. Date: Sat 3rd Oct - Sun 4th Oct 4. Venue : Flamborough -> Filey / Filey -> Scarbourgh 5. Meet location / time : The plan is to meet at a local campsite (to be arranged) on Friday evening & discuss/impliment shuttle arrangements to allow us to be on the water at Flamborough South Landing around 0800 on Saturday. This will allow us to round the headland during the first hour of the north going stream & hopefully not be hindered by an eddy that may form beyond it. 6. Meet to share lifts at: no lift share due to Covid. 7. Anything else: Some parts of this trip will involve exposed sections of coastline with some tidal movement and no escape routes. Where landing is possible there is a chance of needing to come through surf. I expect the format to be 2x day trips covering a continuous linear distance facilitated by shuttles. The overnight stay will be at a local campsite as I'm not familiar with this section of coastline & don't know how feisable a wildcamp would be. The plus side of that is we'll probably be paddling lightly loaded boats which may allow the opportunity to play in the surf & enjoy some rockhopping en-route as & where conditions are suitable. Day 1: Flamborough to Filey (24km). Spring tide with a max rate of 2-3kn at the headland. Day 2: Filey to Scarborough (15km). A more civilised start is possible today. Max rate 2kn at Filey Brigg. Please send me a whatsapp (07730411538) once you've RSVP'd so that I can communicate with you all as a group to confirm or adjust arrangements. All weather dependent etc. see wind and waves forecast here: https://www.windfinder.com/forecast/flamborough Please read notes re trips here: https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/trips/ Make sure you've read the club's (and British Canoeing) guidance regarding kayaking during lockdown. Note: this is a peer trip. I'm happy to arrange and co-ordinate, but I will most likely not be the most experienced kayaker on the water. Make sure you are fully self sufficient. RSVP at least 2 days before the event No guests.
  13. Hi Roy, Yes, drive straight down to the far end of the car park & park next to the 2 shipping containers which you'll be able to see on approach. The river & weir is just over the fence. See you there. Duncan
  14. Event details BE COVID AWARE PEER trip Organiser : Duncan Goulder 07730411538 1. Trip type : Park & Play / own skills practice (un-coached) 2. Level of ability : Improver or above 3. Date : 12/09/2020 4. Venue : The wier behind Kendal Rugby Club by the club container 5. Meet location / time : 17:00 6. Meet to share lifts at : No lift share due to Covid-19. 7. Weather : 8. Anything else : The inspiration for this is that I've just picked up a 2nd hand boat & intend to give it a spin before committing to taking it on a river trip. I invite fellow club members to join me for a play. Following club protocol please RSVP so that numbers can be limited and recorded. I'll be there from 17:00 regardless of whether anyone else comes or not. Once you've RSVP'd, feel free to turn up & join in, & if you send me a text I can let you know if there is any change to the plan. I don't expect any coaching to be available on this session, so expect to work on your own skills. Please make sure you've read the club's (and British Canoeing) guidance regarding kayaking and Covid-19. Please read notes re river trips here: https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/trips/ Note: this is a peer trip.
