Isle of Bute wild camping

Event details

The plan is to circumnavigate Isle of Bute, Argyll, in 3.5 days (10 to 12 miles a day with lots of get outs) in usually sheltered water.

The trip is suitable for Improvers, because we'll avoid crossing the Clyde, by starting at the north end of Bute. I will select direction and distances depending on weather and tide. Also if windy we may select a different route, as it can get quite bumpy in the south of Glen Callum.

There will be opportunities to explore Bute and Inchmarnock by foot and also paddle further into the sea lochs.

Wildlife, scenery and beaches are spectacular - lots of variety.  I know of several perfect wild campsites plus the kayakers campsite in the North. We may visit a couple of my favourite cafes too!

Check out Roddy's kayaking guide to Bute.

Aim is to meet at Colintraive ferry by about 1pm, park cars on Bute by ferry, and then we're off! We should finish mid afternoon on Sunday 19th.

If we get another Leader we'll add a couple of spaces.

1. Event co-ordinator Annette Morris

2. Trip Leaders: Annette Morris and John Soady.

3. Trip type: Coastal sea kayaking with short crossing to Inchmarnock

4. Level of ability: Improver or better

5. Date:  Thursday 16 May 2024 to Sunday 19th May

6. Venue: Isle of Bute

7. Meet location/time: Colintraive, Thursday afternoon. 1pm

8. Travel: 2 hours from Carlisle to Gourock Dunooon Ferry. 15mins on ferry then 30 mins drive to Bute north ferry.  Return Sunday afternoon.

9. Sea kayaks

I am happy to co-ordinate and lead the trip. However, as we will be a team, we are jointly responsible for each other’s safety on the water.

Please ensure you carry the correct kit for the trip you are attending

Hi Annette, as I am joining you on the previous trip and consequently will be in the area I would have liked to continue the trip with both these paddles, thanks for organising these Annette.

Therefore I would also like to be a reserve please.

Cheers George
