Coordinator: John Soady
Leader: John Soady
Trip type: Sea kayak - 4 days, 3-night wild camping.
Level of ability: Intermediate. Although there are minimal tidal challenges and open crossings, I have graded it intermediate because the trip will proceed up to the top of the intermediate remit (Beaufort 4, up to 17knots). Suitable for paddlers having the sea kayak award. If you regard yourself as an improver, and/or haven't experienced kayak-camping (aka expedition paddling) but reasonably confident in Bf4 conditions, contact me for a chat.
Dates: Friday 18th to Monday 21st October. It would be helpful to be flexible with start/finish dates in case the weather necessitates shifting the trip back a day or two.
Venue: 1st night in Loch Striven (~5k), 2nd night in the Kyles of Bute (~15k), 3rd night in Loch Fyne (~27k), finish Otter Ferry (~15k) - or reverse direction if wind dictates.
Meet location/time: 1400 in the pull-in just north of Craigendive (///dabbled.confronts.slumped).
Lift sharing: I will set up a WhatsApp group for sorting trip arrangements.
Additional information
Although within just a couple of hours of Glasgow, the Argyle Cowal peninsular offers a fabulous remote feel to a wild-camping journey. In windy conditions the lochs and Kyles, being flanked by mountain terrain, can concentrate the wind and present hard-going conditions in some sections; hence its intermediate grading.
Meet at Craigendive at the north end of Loch Striven, unload boats and shuttle cars to Otter Ferry (about an hour there & back).
To get there take a Gourock ferry to Dunoon (two routes: Calmac from Gourock or Western Ferries from McInroy's Point).
Please read LCC sea trip notes here.
I am happy to co-ordinate and lead the trip. However, as we will be a team, we are jointly responsible for each other’s safety on the water.
Please ensure you carry the correct kit for the trip. Ask for advice if you are unsure.
RSVP limit 6 unless another leader comes along.
RSVP at least 2 days before the event.

This trip is in collaboration with Cumbria Wildlife Trust. The citizen science part is that we have been asked if we could assist CWT with a seagrass research project by placing some underwater cameras in a seagrass bed within Roosecote Sands (located adjacent to the docks), and taking some water samples for DNA analysis. This task should take just an hour or two. We would then paddle over to Peil Island for lunch, and beyond, subject to time and tide. CWT have offered to share their findings and any interesting video obtained.
Hello Mike. We'll add the RV details in due course, and there are no forms to complete. We'll ask about any medical issues at the briefing. It's a moving water skills focused paddle so won't be travelling very far.

This event is for LCC sea leaders, aspirant leaders and organisers from 7pm at the Factory Tap, Kendal.
Organiser - John Soady
We will pool ideas for sea kayaking events for the 2024 season, with the aim of providing for the diverse range of sea paddling interests and competencies in the club. Hopefully we will be able to agree at least one weekend / multi-day event per month, and narrow down some dates for the calendar. Bring some ideas!
If you are not yet confident in your leading style please do come along. It's an opportunity to pair up with a more experienced leader to build your confidence with club groups on the water.
Join us anytime from 7pm. Thursdays are generally Food from the Fells curry nights at the Tap, so you can join me for a curry if you wish.
1. Event co-ordinator: John Soady
2. Trip Leader leader: John Soady
3. Trip type: sea expedition (kayak camping). Island hopping and exploring the rocky west coast, involving moderate distances of around 15-20km, with opportunities for refuelling on coffee and cake at coastal villages and marinas en-route.
4. Level of ability: Improver / Intermediate.
5. Date: travel out from UK Sat 3rd September (depending on flights) for a week’s paddling.
6. Venue: Boat / kit hire and trip departure from Nautopp Kayak Centre in Grebbestad (~70 miles north of Gothenburg) - https://www.nautopp.com/kajakcentergrebbestad
7. Travel: to be agreed - direct flights available from Manchester to Oslo or Copenhagen, from where a bus can take us to Grebbestad (bus options here - https://www.nautopp.com/find-us-nautopp-seakayaking). The bus stops close to the kayak centre. Oslo appears to offer the best flight / bus option.
8. Equipment: previously I have flown with personal paddling and camping kit and just hired a kayak, but paddling and camping kit can also be hired if preferred. Self-guided hire options here - https://www.nautopp.com/kayak-rental-day-multiday-bohuslan.
9. Provisioning: there is a supermarket adjacent to the kayak centre, so no need to travel out with food supplies. Gas can be bought at the centre.
10. Finalising arrangements: I’ll arrange a pub / online get-together for everyone interested to discuss travel and trip duration preferences.
