River safety session

Event details

Meet at Devils brudge Kirkby Lonsdale at 9.30.
It will be windy and cold.  Please bring a dry suit and wear extra layers under your dry suit. Helmets to be worn on river bank. Bring warm clothes and lunch and bivi shelter if you have one.

We will be swimming for some parts of the session.

Part 1 of river safety skills. Aimed at all river paddlers to, learn, update and / or practice safety procedures.

16 places plus 4 providers.

  9. Anything else   Please bring with you any kit you would usually carry on a river trip. We will be looking at the skills necessary for basic river safety
  • Exit from kayak or canoe in the event of capsize.
  • Swim to shore with kayak or canoe and paddle.
  • Know how to be rescued by a throwline.
  • Carry kit for beginner paddle and know how to use it.
  • awareness of potential hazards on a river trip.
  • when to do active and passive swimming.
  • do a swimming self rescue using a paddle to help.
  • do and kayak to swimmer rescue as swimmer or rescuer.
  • carry the kit for an improver paddle and know how to use it.
  • do shouting rescue / do reaching rescue / do throw line rescue / do a shallow water wading rescue.
  • recover a floating kayak or canoe and paddle.
  • assist another when recovering a floating kayak and

The trip will be led by a BC qualified or an LCC approved leader, however we will paddle as a team taking joint responsibility for each other’s safety on the water.
