Rescue practice for Sea Kayakers on Coniston aimed at getting skilled up & refreshed before the water temperatures drop.
(Coniston is about 15deg C just now, but lake & sea temperatures will drop to <5deg C in the winter)
If you're going to be sea paddling between late autumn & spring, this session is for you.
This will be primarily a wet session, looking at efficiency in assisted re-entries (from the point of view of both rescuer and rescuee). There will be time to work on self-rescue techniques, and possibly practice reuniting a swimmer separated from their kit.
The water is still fairly warm at the moment , and we'll find a good spot out of the wind, however please do wear extra layers under your dry suit so we can make the most of our time & maximise the scope of the session. It's easiest to learn when comfortable, & with good planning there's no need to get cold during late summer rescue practice.
7. Meet point: Brown Howe Car Park , 10am (https://maps.app.goo.gl/FZYo4A2VSot5hHcS8) (You can park in a layby just north of the car park for free if you get there early enough & boats can be unloaded over the wall, but it might not accomodate us all so we'll meet each other as a group in the car park to save confusion)
8. Meet to share lifts at: Arrange your own
9. Anything else: I'll be in touch on WhatsApp before the trip. If you're not sure this trip is for you, feel free to drop me a message or phone call. Please wear a drysuit (or a wetsuit with a windproof cag over it), warm under-clothes and snack/lunch. A flask of tea would be a good idea too, plus cosy clothing to look forward to afterwards!
If you want to do some rolling or re-entry rolling practice you might like a neoprene hood.
There'll be lots of time for questions/discussion, to try stuff out in the water, & to dial in essential techniques...
