When her brother Toby died at 40, Katie was left with a book to write and an adventure to finish. Deciding to do both she embarked on a journey that took her from the monotonies of motherhood in urban Barcelona to the far reaches of the Shipping Forecast. Learning the art and science of sea kayaking along the way,Katie found herself in the wilds of the British Isles, forced her to face her past and question her present. Toby had set out in 2018 to sea kayak in all the areas of the Shipping Forecast. His journey took him to the harshest and most tranquil stretches of our seas, where he found the real people, places and stories behind the familiar names and imagined environments of the well-loved forecast. Taking up his mantel, Katie paddled the eleven remaining sea areas ending in Shetland in July 2024. In this talk, Katie will take you through Toby’s adventure, her challenge writing his story and her experience of finishing his journey. Toby’s story is captured in the book “Moderate Becoming Good Later” while Katie’s story will be published in May 2026.
