Lakeland Canoe Club

Beginners Riverskills

Event details

Monday 24/01/2022

There is absolutely no water at the moment. There is however a Lake.

A possible solution would be to meet at Newby Bridge with Sea Kayaks and paddle up Windermere

Does everybody have a Sea Kayak?

What do we think?

The level of ability for these  paddling trips is aimed at people who are in their early stages of their development as whitewater paddlers and who are building up their experience of running rivers.

I find it really hard not too be welcome anybody onto any trip, but on occasion when intermediate or advanced paddlers attend these trips people for whom these trips are intended are unable to attend.

British Canoeing Moderate Water remit specifies one leader to a maximum number of four participants.

Please could people consider their suitability for these trips before signing on.

The rivers I have in mind would not exceed Grade 2

Could I emphasize ......

These trips are aimed at paddlers in their early stages of their development as whitewater paddlers and who are building up their experience of running rivers

1. Event coordinator: Brian Clough

2. Trip Leader: Brian Clough

3. Trip type: River

4. Level of Ability: My intention is to keep river choice at the bottom of the British Canoeing remit for Moderate Water ie. Grade 2

5. Date: 27/01/2022

6. Venue/Meet/Share Lifts:   Will meet at 10:00

7. Anything else:

Bring a Picnic and a Warm Flask for a stop along the way.

Please read notes regarding river trips here …….

I am happy to co-ordinate and lead the trip. However, as we will be a team, we are jointly responsible for each other’s safety on the water.

Please ensure you carry the correct kit for the trip you are attending. We can discuss any questions about the kit required and/or alternatively…….

https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/whitewater-safety/

There is a link at the bottom of the page for Kit. There are other useful links, all of which are recommended reading.

Kayak specific helmets must be worn on theses trips

Details can be found here…….

https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/whitewater-safety/5/

The club does have a number of kayak specific helmets available for hire

Could I also draw your attention to …….

https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/risk-assessments-for-river-trips/

Any river in flood or spate is considered to be out of the club remit due to the additional risk of rescuing a swimmer and their kit. Similarly any rapid for which adequate safety can be not set is considered out of the club remit.

Guests by arrangement with organiser, prior to trip please.

Hi Brian, could you please clarify: Please could people consider their suitability for these trips before signing on.

Do you mean to have a basic paddling competency, or for those more advanced to not take places from those of us needing to gain experience in order to develop and advance.
