This is a circumnavigation of the Isle of Bute involving 2 nights camping. The intention is to meet and launch from the public parking and slipway at Largs Marina (NGR - NS 20791 57459) on Friday evening. Meet at 16.30 and launch at approx. 17.30 with a short paddle (approx. 11 Km) to the south end of Bute at Glencallum Bay (NS 11190 52785). Camp at Glencallum Bay. Saturday we will paddle north up the Sound of Bute, passed Inchmarnock and into the Kyles of Bute with the intention of camping at Balnakilly Bay or Burn Islands (NGR NS 02260 74292). It is likely there will be some time for exploring on the way as this is approx. 31Kms. Sunday will be a paddle south from Collintraive down the east coast of Bute crossing the Clyde to the North tip of Great Cumbrae Island (approx. 30Km). Once again there should be time for exploring and watching the wildlife. The paddling involves small crossings between the mainland and islands of up to 5kms and paddlers should be capable of undertaking this, there are some gentle tide races. The weather at the moment looks fine and the sea state low, however I will take stock on Thursday evening and adjust the plans or cancel as necessary. The trip involves wild camping with sites that have limited access to fresh water, so you should be comfortable with this and suitably equipped to be self-sufficient. 1. Event co-ordinator Chris Wade 2. Trip Leader: Chris Wade 3. Trip type: Coastal Sea kayaking with up to 5Km crossings to between mainland and island. 4. Level of ability: Intermediate or better 5. Date: 1st 2nd and 3rd July 6. Venue: Largs Marina and Isle of Bute 7. Meet location/time: Friday 1st June 16.30 Public slipway Largs Marina NGR - NS 20791 57459 KA30 8EZ https://goo.gl/maps/MvpnUeHhbQqJFiK9A 8. Travel: 3.5 hours from South Lakes to Largs. I have one space available with me leaving Lancaster at lunchtime Friday, otherwise please arrange travel yourself as necessary. 9. Sea kayaks only Please read notes re trips here: https://lakelandcanoeclub.wordpress.com/trips/ I am happy to co-ordinate and lead the trip. However, as we will be a team, we are jointly responsible for each other’s safety on the water. Please ensure you carry the correct kit for the trip you are attending.
  3. 1. Event co-ordinator: Chris Wade 2. Trip Leader: Chris Wade 3. Trip type: Estuary 4. Level of ability : Intermediate or better 5. Date: Sunday 20th March 6. Venue : Knott End 7. Meet location / time : at Knott End Car Park at 09.00 https://goo.gl/maps/dBgadGDyd17YQPc58 8. Meet to share lifts at: none needed 9. Anything else: The trip will use the tide to reach as far up the river as possible before it turns, usually this will mean reaching the bridge at St Michaels on Wyre. It is long paddle 48Kms (24Kms each way) and although tide assisted will take 4.5-to-5-hour, so paddlers should have a good level of fitness. Tide height is 9.33M so it will be running fairly swiftly at the mouth of the river and around some obstacles, with the potential for rough water in places Sea kayaks only. Meet at Knott End car park OS NGR SD 34642 48420 at 09:00 and aim to be on the water no later than 09.45. (which is 2.5 hours before high tide) Bring food and drink as we will stop for lunch and comfort breaks Not suitable for novices.
